Why We Left Etsy — The Truth

We didn’t leave Etsy on a whim. We left because their system stopped serving sellers and started draining them.

Etsy’s rising fees forced sellers to raise prices just to break even. That isn’t fair to collectors, and it isn’t how we do business.

They restricted sellers to USPS as the only built‑in shipping option — one of the most expensive carriers for heavy items. They claimed you could use other carriers, but only if you opened and paid for separate accounts yourself. And even then, Etsy refused to accept documentation from those carriers during disputes. Only USPS tracking “counted,” even when insurance was purchased elsewhere.

And then came the breaking point.

The $50 Item That Cost Us Money

We sold a heavy collectible for $50 — an item other sellers listed for $250–$300. We clearly stated the buyer would pay shipping.

Etsy failed to charge them.

USPS shipping was $165. Etsy paid us $35 after fees. And then — when we refunded the buyer due to Etsy’s system error — Etsy charged us $48.16 on our personal card to “reverse” the fees they had already taken.

Yes. We sold a $50 item, received $35, refunded the buyer, and Etsy still charged us more money. We literally owed them for a sale that never should have gone through.

When we contacted support, the answer was: “You have to pay those fees because we advertised it for you.”

That was the moment we shut it all down — both my shop and my wife’s. We removed every listing and walked away.

Our Philosophy Moving Forward

Collecting should be fun. Selling should be simple. No marketplace should take more than the seller earns.

We collect cool stuff, we sell it when we’re ready, and we use the money to buy new treasures or pay bills. That’s it. We’re not here to fund a corporation’s advertising budget.
